A problem with a support wall delayed residents’ move from Williams Hall to newly renovated Hartzell Hall in late September, but the dean of students now says residents are expected to move by the end of November.

Renovations to Williams will begin in May at the earliest, according to Dr. Demetrius Johnson, who also is director of residential life.

Johnson said the delay occurred when a contractor discovered a support wall needed to be strengthened.

Hartzell offers 95 beds for female residents. Each room is furnished with a desk, chair and bed for each resident, along with a full bathroom with double sinks.

Johnson said some perks in the renovated dorm, closed since Hurricane Katrina, include a newly built private courtyard in the rear of the residential hall, Wi-Fi, cutting-edge adjustable heating and cooling thermostats, and new bug- and fluid-proof mattress,.

Safety features include top and bottom locks on each door, two state-of-the-art hurricane-resistant shelters, an intercom system, video camera surveillance on each floor, one-key access for the building and laundry, and a lockable drawer on each desk. Conveniences include a new elevator, energy-efficient motion-sensor lighting, a first-floor study room and adjustable bed levels for comfort.

Meanwhile, a leaking portion of the roof on Williams Hall was repaired in the last 30 days and the entrance repaired, Johnson said.
