As the Dillard community is revamping, revitalizing and renovating the school, it is also preparing for a grand 2007 homecoming week Nov. 10-17. “The Dillard Renaissance” is this year’s theme, which reflects the idea of a renaissance: rebirth, renew and revival “Just as the contributors of the Harlem Renaissance were on the frontier of creating culture, we as Dillard shareholders are on the frontier of creating a new legacy on this campus,” said Ronnell Perry, SGA president and senior international business and Spanish major. After two years of only focusing on the rebuilding of Dillard from the wrath of Hurricane Katrina, Perry said he is ready to reawaken the spirit of campus. The SGA along with the help of the class councils have worked hard to plan a homecoming week that students will remember. The class councils picked themes for each day of the week to add more fun and spice. The themes include “Grown ‘n Sexy,” “Throw Back 80s” and “Alter Ego.” The week starts Saturday, Nov. 10 with a Miss Dillard community service and an Alumni Social, a new addition to the homecoming week. With reflections of Dillard’s heritage, the Founder’s Day Convocation kicks off homecoming week with renewed vigor and sense of school pride. Other events include a vendor fair, karaoke night, class and organization step-off and pep rally. The homecoming parade is also returning this year. There are some additions to the list of events, casino night, field day, tailgate party, homecoming game and the unveiling of Dillard’s mascot. “This is my last Dillard homecoming. Hopefully it will be the best,” said Chris Stewart, senior political science major. Stewart is not the only student waiting with anticipation to begin homecoming week. Veronica Sumner, 2007-2008 Miss Dillard University, cannot wait to be presented at the coronation ball. “A Serene Night of Excellence and Heritage” is the theme that Miss Dillard and her royal court chose. “To me it is saying that coronation is going to be a calm and peaceful night for students to represent Dillard, displaying excellence and heritage,” said Sumner.
