NEW ORLEANS (Nov. 9, 2017) – Intramural teams from Dillard in volleyball and flag football are expected to participate in a state competition Nov. 16-19 at McNeese State University, according to Perry Brown, director of recreational and intramural sports.
Brown said male and female students from DU will go head-to-head with schools from across the state of Louisiana including Southern University, LSU, Grambling State, McNeese, Southeastern Louisiana University, ULL, LSU-Eunice, Loyola, University of Louisiana-Monroe, and Northwestern State University at the LCIRSA State Championship even in Lake Charles.
To participate, go to Brown to register.
Brown’s office also offers club sports such as soccer and basketball. Club sports differ from intramural sports in that club sports are solely recreational and fall below varsity sports. Once teams for club sports are formed, the club can come up with their own membership dues and organization rules as set out by university policy.
No tryouts are required, and students are encouraged to participate. Overall, about 115 students are involved in sports such as basketball, flag football, volleyball, soccer and softball, with basketball having the largest numbers, according to Brown.
Brown said, “If there are sports students want to see on campus that we don’t currently have, I’d be more than happy to get it started.”
Students involved in intramural sports practice on their own, which means they are in charge of scheduling, locations, and more. The exception is 5-on-5 club basketball, which takes place during the spring semester with three structured practices a week. This team plays against bigger universities such as Tulane, Texas A&M and others.
The teams play at different times weekly. For example, the volleyball may have two games a week, the basketball teams may play three times a week, and the softball team plays once a week on Sundays.
Brown, in his second year at Dillard, plans to “bring as many activities” as he can. The programs that he has planned so far include a Barataria Preserves hiking trip, Wichita River rafting and Tunica Hills camping. The most recent trip was canceled due to Hurricane Nate and rescheduled for the last weekend in October.
This year is the first year that Brown’s office has planned outdoor adventures. Brown said student signups have been few, but are gradually increasing.
The fitness center also falls under Brown’s office. Classes are offered every weekday, and the center has new layout for more efficient use, he said. Spin class, from 8-9 p.m. on Tuesdays, is open to 10 people and is “first come, first served.” Boot-camp is held from 8-9 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. And yoga is offered at 6 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays.
Brown said, “Bootcamp is more physical so I wouldn’t suggest that people take boot-camp and yoga in the same day. The body needs to rest.”
If you’re interested in getting involved with a team, entry forms may be found in the lobby of every residence hall and in Brown’s office at Student Union Room 239.
