Dillard University’s Campus Programming Team hosted its first “Pop the Balloon” event as part of the Love and Sex Week festivities on Feb. 13, 2025.
This engaging event aimed to promote healthy conversations about relationships, consent, and sexual health, all while adding a festive twist to Valentine’s Day. The event took place in Georges Auditorium. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and laughter, as students mingled and participated in various activities.
“I thought it was sweet to host this during Valentine’s Day and get students to participate in it. I wish there was more student engagement in it, but it was a good effort. It was funny, and I’d go to another,” said freshman Madison Cox.
At the center of the event was the “Pop the Balloon” game, where participants lined up on the stage to find love through various questions, contestants were able to dismiss people by— popping the balloon or not and further question each other with the promise of revealing fun facts, insightful questions, or thoughtful challenges. Some questions prompted discussions about personal boundaries, communication in relationships, and understanding, while others encouraged students to share their thoughts on love and romance in a light-hearted way.
In addition to the balloon popping, various booths provided valuable resources on sexual health, including information on safe practices, healthy relationships, and campus counseling services.
Many students expressed appreciation for the fun and engaging way the event addressed critical topics. Others highlighted the importance of events like this in promoting a culture of openness and respect regarding love and relationships on campus.
“The overall idea was generally good, it didn’t start on time and I wish it was a bit more collaborative. But it was entertaining for sure, I still enjoyed my time despite it. Looking forward to another one. Overall, it was an okay event, but I expected a bit more energy and engagement. Second time’s the charm,” said Jaznine Clark, a senior voice performance major.
As the event came to a close, students left the event not only with the humorous excitement from witnessing our DU recreation of the sensational challenge popping balloons, but also with new insights and a deeper understanding of the importance of healthy relationships and sexual health.
The “Pop the Balloon” event combined fun and education, contributing to the mission of Dillard University’s Love and Sex Week celebration.
