October’s Artist of the Month, Santino Castillo, is a senior visual arts major, better known by his nickname “Tino.”
In 2021, Castillo started photography in his freshman year at Dillard University, using his phone to take pictures of the moon and the sky.
“I was definitely the ‘Wait, let me take a picture,’ friend,” he said.
From there, his mentor, Kevell Byrd, a 2025 Dillard alumna, reached out and “taught him the ropes” of professional photography. Since then, Castillo has expanded his love of the arts by starting his own photography business, Suave Snaps.
In addition, he also started creative directing in 2021 and then learned graphic design in 2022. In 2023, he started styling and, in 2024, modeling.
“I enjoy the ability to show the world my eyes through my creative lens. I hope for my art to be timeless pieces that capture the joy of life for others to experience for time to come,” said Castillo.
Castillo raves about his love for photography and how it “runs deep in his veins.” Castillo has a knack for creative shoots that express individuality, while capturing precious moments through his lens at Suave Snaps Photography, he said. Castillo believes that every moment tells a story, and he wants to preserve those memories.
Castillo’s mission at Suave Snaps is to turn “fleeting moments into lasting treasures,” he said.
“He captured the essence and pride of my Black History Month celebration perfectly. The photos are powerful and truly reflect the spirit of the moment. The experience was uplifting and inspiring as I felt seen and celebrated,” said Sonse’rae Fuery, junior mass communication major.
Clients have praised Castillo for his ability to capture the raw spirits of their events and his ability to uplift them to make them feel confident.
“Our Valentine’s shoot was magical! He made us feel comfortable and natural, and the photos show our love and connection beautifully. It was the perfect way to celebrate our relationship,” said William Knuckles IV, a senior student.
Castillo covers a wide range of events, such as weddings or small groups. Castillo also offers a variety of packages, such as headshots starting at $50 or standard sessions at $125.
