Under the direction of head coach Javonne Butler, the Lady Blue Devils volleyball team has finally concluded their season of victory. With two honors earned at the annual GCAC conference by two of our finest, these ladies can be proud of who they have become as a team, as well as individuals.
Michelle Daughtry, a freshman from Birmingham, Ala., was named all conference freshman, an honor that can only be attained by having a heart for the game. She has emerged into more than her position as middle hitter suggests.
"I try to maintain a sense of courage, and a mind to remain humble both on and off the court," Daughtry said. Her assertion and awareness for the game has contributed to major victories.
Regardless of what the scoreboard says, Michelle makes it her obligation to hold fast to her possession of energy when the team needs it most. Additionally Cicely Ozen a senior from Breaux Bridge, La., was named player of the year during the conference tournament. A prestigious honor that can only be obtained through a determination to remain faithful to the game, a task Ozen has successfully conquered, according to teammates.
She has remained a consistent player for four consecutive years of her college career. Upon graduation in May, Ozen will receive a bachelor’s degree in business and finance.
The Lady Blue Devils have worked hard to solidify the foundation of their bond as a team. Many team members said it is not easy getting up for classes, remaining consistent in earning acceptable grades, and attending daily practices that can sometimes be quite strenuous.
Though support form the student body was not always rendered at games, they continued to utilize their skill to win, which eventually led them to the conference finals. "We Will Not Break" is a phrase used by the team to provide an accurate amount of mental strength to conquer victories. With a powerful season ahead of them, these Lady Devils certainly have a reason to be proud of what they have accomplished thus far.
