NEW ORLEANS (March 29, 2019) – The spring 2019 student population has decreased by 69 students, or 5.3 percent, to 1,240 when compared with the fall 2018 census, according to statistics provided by Dr. Willie Kirkland, director of Institutional Research and Assessment.
As is typical, nearly six of every 10 students here is from Louisiana, and more than three-fourths of the population are females.
Dillard had 1,309 students in fall 2018, the start of the academic year, showing a slight decline for this semester. However, when spring 2018’s census of 1,172 is compared to this spring 2019’s count of 1,240, the numbers are actually up 5.8 percent, or 68 students.
The total student population at Dillard for the last two years has been:
- Fall 2017: 1,292.
- Spring 2018: 1,172.
- Fall 2018: 1,309.
- Spring 2019: 1,240.
While 57.2 percent of DU students are from Louisiana, another 26 percent come from three states: California, Texas and Illinois, in that order. The report shows California has provided 139 students, or 11.2 percent; Texas, 130 students, 10.4 percent; and Illinois, 54, 4.4 percent of the enrolled population.
The top five majors has remained consistent, with Biology, Public Health, Business Administration, Psychology and Criminal Justice. The Top 10 categories and their numbers are:
- Biology, 187 majors, 15.1 percent.
- Public Health, 130, 10.5 percent.
- Business Administration, 113, 9.1 percent.
- Psychology, 99, 8 percent.
- Criminal Justice, 94, 7.6 percent.
- Mass Communication, 80, 6.5 percent.
- Physics, 57, 4.6 percent.
- Undecided, 45, 3.6 percent.
- Theater Arts, 44, 3.5 percent.
- Chemistry, 42, 3.4 percent.
Nursing, which historically has been known for bringing in the most freshmen into Pre-Nursing, has 42 majors when you consider Nursing (36 students) and Nursing RN to BSN (6). Together, these students represented 3.4 percent of the student population. Another 14 students, or 1.1 percent, is designated as Pre-Nursing.
