SGA and Royal Court Candidates hosted a Meet The Candidates event last Wednesday in the Student Union to interact and build connections with the student body!
The event started at 6 PM. Music and conversation filled the building. Numerous candidates had tables set up with food, boards, and decor plastered with policies and brands of their campaign. In total, 12 candidates showed up to the event to give the student body a chance to learn more about their visions for this upcoming term.
Bria Johnson, running for Miss Freshman, says one of her policies is called serenity for success. “I believe that for people to academically succeed, they need to be able to wind down mentally,” she says.
Johnson states that she will work towards creating wellness events for students such as yoga and nature walks. “I want to give students the space to wind down,” she said.
Other candidates’ policies valued the community. “What students should expect from me if I were to win my position is…boldness, leadership, elevation, and unity. With that being said, I would love to unite the class of DU ‘25,” says Cymoine Holmes who is running for Senior Class Representative.
“My campaign is about the concerns of freshmen …and the rest of the community,” says Carissa Washington, candidate for freshman Senator.
A speeches and debate event for the candidates took place in Georges Auditorium last Thursday at 11 AM during convocation. Competitors debated what set them and their policies apart from others.
“What sets me apart is my energy for everyone else. I feel like my energy can get people out of their shells,” says Jaxson Green, running for Mister Freshman, “my goal for my campaign is to get my class out of their shells”
“My drive, I care, I’m not trying to fake the funk…I’m not trying to be in the position just to be in the position, I actually want to put in the work and show my class that’s what they nominated me to represent them for,” states Kaylei Redman, running for Senior Class Representative.
Voting opened on Friday Sep. 20 at 12:00 AM.
