Hurricane Helene made landfall Thursday Sept. 26th, leaving death and devastation across Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
There have been at least 215 deaths accounted for with hundreds more missing across all six states. North Carolina has taken some of the worst damages with the town of Chimney Rock seemingly wiped off the map. The city of Asheville, North Carolina’s bridges and infrastructure were also destroyed.
According to CNN, the mayor of Asheville Esther Manheimer said, “The devastation wrought by Helene in the city is “catastrophic.”
The Nolichucky Dam, located in Eastern Tennessee, narrowly avoided failure due to the overflow of rainwater. Many had to be rescued due to their homes and vehicles being submerged.
Helene first hit Florida’s Big Bend then moved into Georgia. After that, it hit North and South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Each state had record breaking amounts of rain and flooding.
The storm stretched 500 miles, leaving millions without power, shelter, food or access to clean water.
