Guess what Blue Devils! Kendrick Lamar is performing for Super Bowl LIX on February 9, 2025, right here in New Orleans.
Kendrick Lamar has been having a phenomenal year, kicking it off with his hit “Not Like Us” topping Billboard Magazine’s Hot 100 chart and breaking multiple records. On YouTube, the music video has reached over 140 million views and broke the record for most views in 24 hours by a Hip Hop video. He and his team have been working on creative projects to bring his hometown, Los Angeles, together for the purpose of more than just making music. Kendrick is building onto his legacy and what more does he need to do than perform at the Super Bowl?
The announcement of Kendrick Lamar’s selection as the headliner was an upset for Lil Wayne, as he is a New Orleans native and was vying to perform. In an Instagram post, he said “It hurt a whole lot. I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for a letdown. I thought there was nothing better than being in that spot and that stage, and that platform in my city”. The NFL has hosted the Super Bowl 10 times in New Orleans, and not once has Lil Wayne headlined the half-time show.
“It broke me, but I’m trying to put myself back together”, he says, not forgetting to shout out his fans and the support they give him. This might have been the right choice, but most are happy that out of all the artists they could’ve chosen, besides Lil Wayne, Kendrick Lamar was selected to perform.
Around campus students reflected on how they felt about Kendrick being the Super Bowl performer. An anonymous student said, “Lil Wayne should have done the performance because Kendrick Lamar is not as known as far as more than the two songs”.
This was probably upsetting for Louisiana natives, but with Kendrick Lamar’s status, he will surely give a good show performance.
