New Orleans has a creative spirit that people from the city are shaped and molded by. For New Orleans native, Ronnesha Ewing, a Dillard University visual arts major, there was something about art that inspired her early and has flourished ever since.
At seven years old, she began drawing. Although it started out as a hobby, it gradually developed into something more, she said. Inspired by her cousin Eddie Peters, who was also an artist, Ewing was motivated to pursue her own artistic expression.
Later in 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, she created her first art piece. She made a monkey piece, inspired by the movie Scarface. The piece made her realize that art is something to take seriously, she said.
Ewing has a special interest in graffiti, freestyle, and street art. Her art has a real feel to it; she wants her art to make people think, she said. One of her goals as an artist is to create things people have never seen before.
Ronnesha says she wants others to react to her art, saying, “I have never seen a piece like this before.”
Ewing wants people to think about her art, discuss it, and study it in depth, she said. She has three concepts that usually provide the inspiration for her art: “experience, thought, and memories of when she was a child,” she said.
“These concepts guide my creative process and provide meaning for my art,” Ewing said.
She realizes that she has yet to find her own style as she continues to create art, but she doesn’t think that’s a bad thing for her as an artist, she said.
“You cannot win a race if you stop running,” is a quote she uses to encourage herself as an artist to be intentional and keep showing up.
Ewing has acquired more knowledge regarding art and different techniques in her studies at Dillard University.
In 2025, she created a Pac-Man-inspired mural near the entrance of Cook Hall to showcase the school spirit on campus. She made sure it was an exciting piece of art that everyone around the campus could relate to, showing their pride of their campus, she said.
She is preparing to showcase her work in the Dillard Student Showcase on April 9th at 6 pm in the Cook art room. This is another opportunity for her to show her work to the community and showcase her progress as an artist.
Outside of school, Ronnesha uses her art-focused Instagram page, “RareKreationz”, to share her creations.
