Miami destination for aternative spring break in April

NEW ORLEANS (February 18, 2022) – Alternative spring break is set to return in April for Dillard students, with Miami as the destination, according to Dr. Courtney Williams, director of student engagement and leadership.

The estimated cost per student is $800.

The last alternative spring break took place in 2019, when students were able to travel to Memphis, Jackson, and Birmingham to visit iconic civil rights sites.

The trip allows students the opportunity to earn service hours while exploring a new city and being civically engaged. Students also can tour the city independently and will not have a curfew, Williams told more than 50 students who attended an online interest meeting Dec. 14.

He said Florida offers “the right mix of service, civic engagement and fun.”

Known for the South Beach area, the nearby everglades and its Art Deco architectural style, Miami is a coastal metropolis in Miami-Dade county with a population of nearly a half-million people. It’s at the core of the nation’s eighth-largest metropolitan area and  has an average household income of $86,896 and median household income of $58,193.

Participants also will visit area colleges. Williams said one confirmed institution is Florida Atlantic University, but his office is still reaching out to different schools in the area.

Since COVID-19 is still a significant concern, Williams said precautions will be in place to ensure everyone’s safety. And if the number of COVID cases gets too high, Williams said, the trip could be postposed to early summer or canceled as a last report.
